“Substrate” brings together Douglas Shaw Elder, Jim Nelson, and Justin Walker/Annie Mohaupt in an exploration of wall-based artwork that refuses to stay flat. Working with plywood and laminated panels, the artists transform images into dimensional objects that actively inhabit the wall.
Connected by a shared material language, their work opens a dialogue between digital precision and the handmade. CNC processes and measured cuts meet chisels, carving knives, and grinders, with surfaces that reveal traces of process, structure, and touch.
By elevating utilitarian materials into fine art, “Substrate” asks how tools shape visual language and how plywood can become support, image, object, and evidence of making all at once.
