The Library

The Ethel Goddard Art Library is located at the west side of the lobby.  The library contains a large number of books, as well as a variety of DVDs and videos pertaining to artists and artwork.  The books are available for loan for members of the Goddard Center and instructors at the Art Studios.

The Goddard Center's collection of books was begun by Haywood Vaughan in 1988. Other small contributions were made, but it was not until Max McClendon retired from the art faculty at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant that the collection grew substatially. McClendon donated over 200 books, many on art history, techniques and media, artists and their work and philosophy. Records and slides were also included in the McCledon gift.

Later the Goddard Center received a group of books from Max McClendon's aunt, Mrs. Fred Ueltschey of Durant, OK. The Ardmore Art Guild began making book donations as memorials and their members have also donated many art books and videos.

Recently, Dr. and Mrs. James Turrentine and the local McDonalds owners donated a series of teaching videos on art, music and theatre.

In 1993 Larry London, our former director, donated over 50 books to the library. Rick Freeman, former Goddard Center Preparator donated a large number of books in the same year. Long time board member, Ida Williams donated the funds for renovation of the Ethel Goddard Room to the present library and boardroom.

The library catalogue system was accomplished through a student grant from Ida Williams. Sarah Ritter provided the catalogue service.
